THE CLINTON RAILWAY CONTRACT.
, Tenders are now called for the construction of what is jenown as the CUnton Railway Con,tract. _ They arc to be in on the 29th, and the work is to be finished within twelve months from the date of acceptance, uuder the penalty of LIOO a week for every week the contractor may be behind time. The contract commences at the township of Clinton, at the crossing of the main road, and terminates in the Toiro Valley, about half a mile north of the farm of Mr SanJilands, which is a little over four miles from Balclutba. The intermediate distance, called the Toiro section, is the one on which the unemployed are being set to work. The Clinton contract is 16 miles 31 chains long, and includes everything required for putting the line, into complete working order. The Government provide^ the rails. i\.ll the works on the line are very light, and the steepest gradient is, 1 in 60, and the sharpest curve is 15 chains' jradiui. The cuttings are light, but few of them' exceeding G chains in length and 10ft. to 14ft. : in depth. There ara nine bridges upon this contract, these being of either pile or stone, /•yiub. timber superstructure. The spans range from 15ft. to 30ft. When this section, together with the, four miles reserved for the unemployed, shall have been finished, the line will then be complete from Dunedin to InvercargilL
