PORT CHALMERS MECHANICS' INSTITUTE.
• A public meeting, that, we regret to say was but sparsely attended, was held at the Port Ohaimers Mechanics' Institute on Friday even ing, for the purpose of establishing' the Institute on a better footing. For months past very little interest has been taken iv what should be regarded as one of the most valuable adjuncts to the educational system of the Port and hence it was resolved to reorganise and revise and to that end this meeting was called. About 30 persons were present, and Mr J. R. Monson presided. He and several other speakers descanted upon the importance of the object ia view, and the following office-bearers and committee were appointed :— President, Dr Drysdale; Vice President, Mr, J. R. Monson : Treasurer, Mr A. Leok ; Secretary, Mr E. G Allan; Committee: Rev, Mr Maxwell, Messrs Joyce, Dick^ Goldie, Mill, M'Farlane, Sutherland, W. Eider, and A. Cameron. It was decided to improve the library by seilin» a number of the books that had never been read by the subscribers, and to provide others more suitable to ihe public taste. It was also suggested that, to raise tuiids and exrite interest in the Institute, a tea meeting should be held The meeting terminated with a vote of thanks to the Chairman,
