THE PETTICOAT.
" The lorgnettes of fashion," says a Pariß correspondent, "are still mainly directed to that main article of dres3, the petticoat. The fiat abolishing it has' gone forth, and in many cases it ha 9 disappeared utterly ;■ but in a great many other instances it clings to its time-honoured placo. Fashion, aghast at' the stubbornness with which these females refuse to doff the petticoat and don the hitherto distinctively male garment, haa compromised on a middle course. For the benefit of her conservative or reactionary, siatera she has invented a hybrid garment called the ' jupen sac.' This is confined (here I coyer my face with one hand and write blindly with the. other) at the ankles by loose rubber bands,"
