JEWISH PHILANTHROPIC SOCIETY.

The annual meeting oof£ f the Jewish Philanthropic Society was held in the' Synagogue Chambers on the Bth inst. Mr M. "Joel (President) occupied the chair.

THE BALANCE-SHEET. ' ' " The Theasuher (Mr E. Nathan) brought up his annual balance-sheet, from which it appeared that the Society had given relief to the amount of Llls during the past year, being an amount exceeding the subscriptions by L 32. The balance-sheet was adopted. THE ANNUAL HEPORT.

The Committee's report was as follows : " To the members of the Jewish Philanthropic Society of Otago. - "Gentlemen— We have the honour, before retiring from office, to present to you the sixfo annual report, containing the particulars of the transactions during the past year, and have to congratulate you on the continued acd treat utility of the institution.

" We have to report that 18 applicants have received relief, and the amount voted and paid to them was Llls Is 6d, the largest disburse ments made during any year of the Society's existence.

Ton m y eax >}^ e tne previous one, a vote of 1/dO was earned unanimously at a general meeting for the relief of an individual case • and the Society can point to these two cases with great satisfaction, as proving the amount of good that can be done in a sm«n community like this, and that, when an appeal by a worthy applicant is made, the Society is able and willing to meet it in a substantial and suitable manner.

"The Committee regrets that some of th« new arrivals who craved assistance last year have been a further drain upon the funds. "The Committee this year did not deem it desirable to get up any entertainment, or go beyond the ordinary scope of^the institution for obtaining funds, as the total receipts for the year have been LB2 15s, and although there has been expended a larger amount than usual, it may be anticipated that the income will not be less in future, which, under ordinary circumstances, may be considered to meet the demands likely to be made ; but, in case it should prove inadequate, an appeal to the public can be made with better grace. >,' _■ n, " The members now number 77, as agaisat 65 last year, showing a net increase of 12. ' J

" Trusting that our successors may still add to the numbers of subscribers, and that they may be in every way successful in carrying out the good and laudable objects of the institution, in aid of which they can always rely on our hearty assistance."
