CRICKET.

The first match between the Dunedin and South Dunedin Cricket Clubs, which has been anticipated with considerable interest for nome fcune past, was commenced at the Southern Recreataon Ground on Satuiday afternoon. As yet, the former Club his considerably the beat prospects of the game. . They were, however, very fortunate in securing for a very few runs the wickets of Macfariane and Godhy, who are about the most reliable players In punedm. The weather was all that could be desired for cricket, and the spectators seemed IZ !^ c a , £ vv u y lnterest > the game. Now that the club has a mowing machine we see no reason why the grass should not 'be kept down alike in all portions of the field. Owing to tbte drawback a large number of runs were lost, the grass greatly retarding the travelling propensities of the balL The toss having been won by the newlv-form«l Club, they i aecide A to takS the SM innings calls for little comment, Lambert being the only one who kept up his « timber" for any ! length of tune, but he should have been held at ! point when he had scored three. With the ex ceptionof thfc chance, he played very fairly. Lathbury, who recently arrived in Dunedin, was the only other player who obtained double figures. He has a very free ntyle, hits with great forcetp leg, and has a very nice way of outting. We are glad to see Kettle, C. C , in cricketing circles again. He has the prettiest style of batting v i either team, and was show, jag some of his old form whan he unfortunately puthiß leg where his bat should have been. The innings closed for the small total of «i« The fieldufg was payable. S d^ing mention being Hhodes H. Change after change was tried, but without succeas. At last a separation was made, and the s lx th wicket fell for 72 runs. The former played a very pretty innings for 32, as also did Macdonnell for 30. Some very fine batting was exhibited by both players, who received quite an ovation from the spectators. Park played well for his dozen, aud so did Morrison tor 18, not out. Wtten time was called, the telegraph showed 11C for the loss of eight wiukets. The umpires were Messrs Collinson and M'lntyre. We trust the players will commence punctually next Saturday. The highest scorer in the match is to receive a bat. The bowling department appears to be entirely overlooked by the Club when trophies are presented. Subjoined are tfte scores : —
