DRAINAGE OF THE FLAT.

A resident on the Flat writes to us calling attention to certain matters affecting that locality. The streets, especially the main street, are now being as thickly bailfc upon aB some parts of the City, and yet nothing can be done in the way of drainage. To carry out drainage works, sufficient funds are needed, and these cannot be raised till the district has been proclaimed a municipality. To get it proclaimed a municipality, action has been taken in the district, and a numerously signed petition waa presented to His Honour the Deputy- Superintendent lately, requesting that the district be so proclaimed. There has, our correspondent say 8, been some delay on the part of the Government in having the municipality pro< claimed. Residents hope that no rivalry or jealousy on the part of any small portion of the district, or any landowners, will be allowed to stand in tbe way of the determination of the vast majority — that there will be as little delay as there can, so that pressing sanitary measures may be given effect to as soon as possible. Our correspondent points out to us that the Government, if it does not quickly proclaim a municipality, must itself soon, look after the drainage of ft» dMtefr^ari fluty ii the drauwgp is nofc

quickly attended to, and if the City Council does not does not do away with that standing discredit to it. the manure depot, it is very likely that the health, not only of the people of the Flat, but of those of Dunedin, will be endangered. The people of the district, now that the Clutha Railway is open, feel keenly the conduct; of the Conned in keeping pestilential hoircrd in their midst.
