Markets.

Witness Ofjpio*, Thursday Morning. The eight days that have intervened since our last have seen a fair share of business done c for the most part in ordinary trade parcels, but including, svith these, a few more important transactions. An auction sale on Friday, held by Mr Whitelaw on behalf of the b ire Insurance Companies, at the Phoenix Bond, of goods more or less damaged by fire and water at the late fare on the premises, afforded a test of the market, which proved favourable. The sale was numerously attended, the bidding lively, and considering the damaged condition of the : reater part of the goods, the prices full. A miscellaneous lot of soft goods, realizing about £200, and badly damaged, were competed for briskly ; general imports and groceries were Knocked down at good values ; candles, that are not privately over brisk at present (Belmonts gelling at 10 id), were sold ; De Koubaix— bidly damaged— at BJd, Belmonts at Bd, others at 9£d. Dried fruits, eagerly s mght after just now, and maintaining high quotations, realised we'd : Valencia raisins 6M aud r leme, sdandCd; ves'as brought 13s6'd and 17s. Hops, in which little business has been doing privately of late, brought— Tamanian, Is 6d and 9d ; Nelson pressed, Is 4d ; do impressed, Is Id ; Kents, 1872s and lS7irs, Cdand4d. To recur to our usual order of report :- Brandy continues lively ; case, Hennes!>y's still scarce, has ceased to be so persistently enquired for; in bulk, sales have been made at 8s 9d ; but holders do not display aDy eagerness to sell at that price. Other brands that have attained to popular favour are selling- freely. In whisky, the demand has rather slickencd, enquiries probably haviug been met from the augmentations which stocks ha\e been receiving from late arrivals. Geneva, dull lor some time, has been entirely inert this past week. Ale and stout are equally sluggish -no inquiry. Wine ta in very limited deiHaDd. In tea,, the market is quiet. In boxej, some sales of medium quality have been effected ; other sizes of packages hang somewhat. A titir quantity, for a beginning, of new season's has arrived, via Mcl bourne. In sugar, a very moderate trade his been done. Groceries and oiimen's stores, as a geueial rule, ha* c been moving off freely at fair rates. In dairy produce, cheese is in briak demand, but supplies of prime quality are difficult to find ; butter, lowering in price as the Spring advances, is not rising in quality sufficiently ; there are prime samples offering, buc not often, while indifferent is plentiful. Kerosene continues dull. In imported malt, stocks, though li"ht, cannot be moved at cost. Galvanised iron continues ni fair demand, the quotation for parcels £35 10s. Cement is oierstocked, and not worth more than 20=-. In timber, there have been some sales of Tasinanian at slightly improved prices. In fencing wire, the higher numbers are in demand. No change since our last has taken place in breadstuffa. Flour is in good bakers' demand; quantities for import not noted specially. Wheat continues to be quoted at from 4s 3d to 4s Oil. Oats remain at unchanged quotations, viz.: jor feed, from 2a ad to 2s 8d ; for milliug, from 2s 9d to 2s lod. Barley is quiet at from 3s 9d to 53 9d, according to quality.
