Butcher's meat remains at last quotations. Roasting beef, Od to 7d per lb ; boiling, 3d to id ; stewing, 41. to 5d ; steak, 6d to Sd. Legs and loins of mutton, 4d to 5d per lb ; chops, 5d ; boiling, 3d. Pork very scarce. The supply of bacon »nd hams is scarcely equal to the demand. Cheese is very plentiful. Butter is "-etting scarcer, with au upward tendency. The cash price of the best is lid to Is per lb. Eggs are In 4d per dozen. Bread is still 5M per 4lb loaf, cash. Those who have long credit pay 6jd, 7id, and, perhaps, in some cases, Bd. Vegetables aro now plentiful. Potatoes a*e 12 lbs Is, and onions Slbs Is ; peas, slbs Is ; French beans, 4lbs Is ; broad beans, Slbs Is , cabbages, 2d to 4d There has been great loss during the season on fruit from Melbourne. The steamer Otago had a large quantity of apdes, pears, plums, pine apples, oranges, and <?rapes, which, instead of being placed, as usual, on deck, wore stowed in the hold, three-fourths of which were eompl*toly spoiled. Ono lot of 100 cisos of plums, which ought to have brought 10s per case, sold at 3s. Of somo other iruits it took seven cnse3 to make one. Apples aro protty plentiful, and sell at 4d to 8d per lb. Oranges are very scarce, and bring Od each. Grapes from Melbourne sell at Is 111 1 Is (id per lb ; peaches from Canterbury Is per lb ; pine apples, Is to 2s each : cocoa nuts, Ud to Is. Flounders and sole 3 especially have been moro plentiful than usual of late. The latter bring from 3s to 6s por pair.
