Markets.

Witness Office, Thursday Morning. In two successive days since our last, wo have had submitted to auction cargoes of tea and sugar. The first was the finely assorted cargo of the Carl from Foo Chow, at the Rooms of Me.-srs M'Landress, Hepburn, and Co, and at which buyers confirmed the inefficency of any longer attempting the disposal of tea at auction. A growing disinclination to this mode of operating has been evident for more than two years; and importers on this occasion were forced to withdraw the whole, but since have been eff eciing sales privately at satisfactory rates. The other was the cargo of sugar ex Farningham, from Mauritius, which was offered by the same firm on 13 th inst, when four out of 20 lines, and 1520 out of 12,312 pockets, were sold, the following being the prices realised :— Finest snowdrop crystals, £36 7s 6d ; do, £36 17s 6d ; do, £37. The Brenda, also from Mauritius, the first sugar importation of Messrs H. J. Gibbs and Co. to this port, and the eighth of the season, has arrived also, aud is announced for the 10th inst., at the rooms of Messrs M'Landress, Hepburn, and Co. In brandy no alteration has taken place ; rates are maintained, but importations being light, importers will be warranted in holding firmly. Whisky remains dull; stocks of bulkheavy. Oilmen's stores are in some articles— such a* salmon and sardines— overstocked, and therefore difficult to move. Butter is advancing in price for good Colonial, but quality still complained of. Cheese is in little demand, the new make not even appreciated. In kerosene no alteration is observable. Corn sacks show a slightly firmer tenden cy. Hops are slow of sale, brewers only buying from hand to mouth. In tobacco, two shipments of Cameron's, consisting of twists, lOa, and aromatics, have been placed, terms withheld. In galvanised iron Btocks are being increased. Fencing wire is coming in plentifully, but a fair demand exists, which will improve when the shearing season is over.
