Mr Barr'ington, a Conservative, has been elested M.P. for Stroud, vies the late Mr Winterbotbam, a Liberal. The British exports for December amounted to £19,175,000, showing a decrease of £1,138,000. The imports amounted to £33,000,000, showing an increase of £3,375,000. , | Despatches from Cape Coast, under date December 13th, state that a bridge had been constructed by the troops over the Prah rirer. The Bank rate of discount is at 4 per cent. Jean Luie, the pretended steward of the Osprey, whe gave evidence in the Tichborne trial, has been committed for trial for perjury. The police deposed that Luie confessed that he was prompted and suborned by Messrs Whalley and Onslow, M.P.'s. January 10th. The New Zealand Loan of half a million at 4& per cent., has been offered at £97. The -wool market is quiet. Prices continue firm. The price of wheat is rising, owing to the scarcity of supplies. A Papal bulletin authorises the next Papal election to be without regular conclave in Monaco, France, or Malta. Germany refuses to recognise it. The Dutch in attacking a mosque atFratow i were twice repulsed, with a loss of 240 killed and woundecf, including 12 officers killed. The Achinese fought demoniacally. January 12th. Mr Whalley declares Luie's statement to be fictitious. January 14th. The insurgent ironclad Numancia has arrived at an Algerian port. General Contreras and other insurgents have delivered themselves up to the French authorities. Paris, January 9th. The Assembly met after a short adjournment, and after a stormy debate the question in reference to the position of the Government was postponed. The Bill relative to the appointment of Mayors was adopted. The members of the French Ministry (De Broglie and Decaze's) have tendered their resignations. 10th January. The French crisis continues. January 12th. At Versailles, the Assembly passed a vote of confidence in the Government by a majority of 58. Madrid, Bth January. A circular has been issued by the Spanish Government which declares their principal mission to be to establish order, and to show that order is compatible with public liberty. 10th January. The Cortes haa been dissolved, and will not reassemble till order is restored. January 12th. Carthagena has unconditionally surrendered to the besiegers, who would grant no other terms. A number of insurgents left in the Numancia, an iron-clad. An insurrection has broken out in Barcelona.
