Melbourne, February 17th.
The first batch of the elections is rather adverse to Ministers. Sir James M'Culloch and Mr Macpherson have been elected, but Mr Michie and Sir Francis Murphy have been defeated. Twenty old members have been returned, and five new men elected. Three candidates lost their deposits.
The Launceston Champion Race was ■won by Romula ; Tim Whiffier, 2nd. Little Dick won the Tamar Handicap ; Nimblefoot, 2nd. Tim Whiffier won the Town Plate ; Strop, 2nd. Nimblefoot won the Mowbray Handicap ; Boiardo, 2nd.
Commercial. — Flour is 103 easier since the beginning of the week- Oats and maize are also declining. Private English advices report a great rise in the price of sugars, and the market here is accordingly firmer.
