New moon occurs on the 4th. first quarter on the 11th, fall moon on the 18th, and last quarter on the 27 th. The moon is neares tb.e earth on the Bth, and furthest fr^m it on the 23rd. She is near Jupiter and Venus on the morning of the 2nd, when the appearance presented by the three will be very beautiful, and well worth the getting up a little before Bunrise to see. She is near Mercury oo tha 3rd, near Mars on the 11th, Saturn on the 20th, and Jupiter again on the 29th. . Mercury is a mo'Eing siar, nearly on the ■equator, and at its greatest western elongation on the 23 rd. Venus is still a morning star, and well placed for observation. . Is passing through the constellation Aquarius, and on the equator at the end of the month. Mars is an evening star, and may be seen In the northern sky ; but sets early, en account of the horizon in that quarter being limited by the biUs. Jupiter is travelling westward among the Stars, and passes Venus on the Ist. ! - Saturn is visible moat of the night, and is j .Tir^ll placed for observation. ■ The " Southland Times " states :— " Between fifteen hundred and two thousand -persons travelled by the Bluff Railway during what we may call • the Governor's week.' It is" gratifying to be able to state that no accident of the slightest importance occurred. "When it is considered that the line has b-«n bo recently opened, that things have scarcely «ot into regular workir g order, the railway management may well be complimented on xbemanner in which it stood the teat of actual practice."
