HAMPDEN ELECTION.
The nomination of a member to the House of Representatives for the Electoral District of Ilampden took place on Wednesday, at Mr. Mitchell's stoic, Waikouaiti. • There were very few electors present. The J?ev. J. A. Fenton propo«cd Captain Fraser of Shag Valley as a (it and proper person to represent the district. In doing so, lie expressed himself averse to taking any pnrt in politics, but felt himself justified in this instance, seeing the aiathy, judging from the paucity of attendance, which seemed to exist amongst the electors on an imnoitnnt occasion such as the present. He spoke highly of the merits of his candidate, who, he believed, would prove himself, if elected, a worthy advocate of the interests of the Province. Mr. J. P. Hepburn, Brooklands, briefly seconded the nomination. There being no other candidate proposed, the Returning Officer (J Gillies, Esq ), declared Captain Eraser duly electe^l. The gallant Captain, in replying, disclaimed any intention of buin<>; present there as a candidate, having come for the purpose of nominating as a member a gentleman who had recently signified his disinclination to accept the office. He feelingly thanked the electors for the unexpected honour they had done him, and promised to do the utmost in his power to prove himself worthy of their choice. ( \pplause.) He concluded by proposing a vote of thanks to the Returning Officer, which was seconded and carried. It is to be regretted that the attendance was so .limited. It is doubtful, however, that a better selection could have been made, end it is to be believed that the majority of the electors will be gratified with the result.
