AJAX’S LOSS ON FORM WAS UNEXPECTED. SYDNEY, March 27. The connections of Ajax are satisfied that the horse’s defeat was due to unsuspected loss of form. Ajax, who uas the hottest favourite ever beaten in a race in Australia, seemed in perfect condition. M. MeCarten said that his beating of Ajax on Spear Chief was the biggest surprise of his riding career. He expressed pleasure at his association with the horse who had preserved the records of Gloaming and Desert Gold. “We all like to see good horses creating fresh records,” lie said, “but wo New Zealanders are jealous of our horses aiul we would regret the passing of a standard that has been the main for so long.’’
