CHAMMBER OF COMMERCE.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Otaki Chamber of Commerce was held on Monday night, the President, Mr. H. X Fearnley, presiding. A welcome was accorded Mr. .Allan, a new member, while four were proposed as members. A vote of sympathy was passed to Mr. and Mrs. Lowiy, on account of the illness- of the former, and it was decided to write and wish him a speedy recovery. A letter was read l'»m Mr. T. Hannah, explaining that he had forwarded his resignation to the Town Clerk, but that it had been returned to Mm with a view to saving the expenses of an election.—Received. The Paraparaumu Ratepayers' Association wrote statin* it had decided to support Mr. Field, M.P., in an endeavour to have the Saturday train .(12.15) delayed for an hour, and nsked that the Otaki Chamber do likewise. •It was decided to support the Association, it being pointed out- that by delaying the train as suggested business men in Wetting-ton would have a better opportunity of visiting the country. _ The siib-eonimitteo ■ appointed relative to dealing with factories reported, through the President, that it had met *nd had received a let-tor from Mr. Byrejt Brown offering 20 acnes of his beach property for the purposes of a factory. So far, however, very little else had bee* done, and discussion was invited.

The Secretary was authorised to write to Industrial .Societies with a of securing a manufactory for Otaki, and at the same time to "point out the advantages that Otaki offered. The wording of the letter was left in the hands of the sub-committee. The President reported that a meeting of Otaki Railway residents had been held relative to securing; improve-' ment at the Railway pest- office, als'o a telephone call box. It was also pointed out to the Postal Deportment that to ring the Railway powt office cost 4d* The Department had replied- refusing to open the office as suggested, but would probably establish a call-box at Otaki township. The eoncession asked for relative to ringing the post office declined. It was suggested that the Chamber seteet a "ticket" for the coming municipal election, and memkers pledge themselves to return candidates who would promise to give support to any movement for the advancement of Otaki. Some members considered that as the suggestion was an important one it be 'deferred fiH next meeting.—Agreed i to.

I The President stated that he was pleased to see that the retailers were making an efi'ort to keep trade in Otaki, and he wished them every success. It was pointed out that the prices ef benzine in Otaki and Levin were different, and it was agreed to write •to Messrs A. S. Pater.son and ®.0., and 'tho Imperial Oil Co. with a view t» arranging for a standard -prise. Exception was taken to the present, dirty state of the town, and it was decided to writo ts the Council asking for improvement, ©ne member, in referring to the matter, stated that the streets ' were a »lisgrace, debris of ail sorts being allowed to eolleat in all parts. It was also. stated that the Council's cart, which used to make periodical visits to various parts to take away rubbish, had not been seen for some considerable time, and it was thought advisable to make application for the «art to be again put into use. On account of the Council not meeting till January it was also agreed to write to the Chairman of the Works Committee (Cr. Kilsby) requesting that the matter l»c give» ntteation a-t an early date.
