HOROWHENUA COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY .MEETING. i The monthly meeting of the Horowhenua County Council, was held in Uie Borough Council Chambers, last Saturday, Cr. ft. A. Monk presiding. CORRESPONDENCE. ■ The secretary of tile Levm-Marton Railway League forwarded a, copy oi uie constitution 0.l uie League, and asiied tor the continued support of the Council towards the end in view. The chairman pointed out that the le.tter' ha,d been .written before Uie ' Commission iiad sal in Levin and he now understood that Uie League was ' waiting the receipt of the report of this commission. He did not see mat there was any use calling a meeting as the matter'had been fully ventilated at the Commission. Tnc Council was in favour of the scheme, but he did not see that any initiative seep should be taken by "the Council. Regarding finance, it was a question of iiow much the cont.ributicm should be. When the County's representative had visited the Foxton meeting he had been instructed to offer a contribution up to L's, and he would move that such sum ibe now voted.— Carried. IMPOUNDED STOCK. Mrs B. Smith (Tokomaru) wrote complaining that a cow belonging to her had been impounded, aitliougn I she had been given to understand ; that the roads were open to residents ' for grazing purposes during the summer months.—Received. KARA ROAD. Mr Franklin Webb, wrote complaining of the condition of the Kara, Road I and asking that pot holes in the surface should be filied in. I The Engineer was instructed to give the. relief asked for. I TOKOMARU SUBDIVISION. Mr Hugh Alters forwarded plans ol i the proposed loading in the Tuwlia- ' katupua Block, and asked that the j Engineer look over same as soon as possible as it was desired to get on with the. work. Referred to-the En- i gineer and Cr. White to deal with. | MAINTENANCE OF DRAIN. ; Mr A. E. Burling, manager for Mr j F. Bryant, Shannon, wrote stating that he had received notice from the Shajunou Borough Council to clean the drain running through his pro- j perty to Uie Kara stream, and stated that as this drain was. of more bene- : fit tq the County than to him he. con- | sidered that assistance should be afforded (him. « lie also stated that he had received notice to clean a drain from his woolshed tq Richardson's boundary, a drain previously cleaned out by the Shannon Borough Council, and asked ' that the Council forward any agree- I ment hearing on the position, made when the work was being carried j out.

The chairman stated that as far as could be discovered no agreement existed. He could not make any suggestion that the Council contribute to the upkeep of the other drain. —Referred to the Engineer and councillors for the Riding, with power to act.

HOKIQ BEACH ROAD. From the Levin Borough Council stating that as a result of a deputation from the County Council asking that the decision not to. contribute to the maintenance of the" Hok.io Beach Road should be reconsidered, the matter had heen referred to the Finance Committee who would communicate further when a decision had been arrived at.—Received. SUGGESTED EXPERIMENTS IN BO AD-S EALING.

Hie chairman stated thai, he. was responsible for the letter to the- Highways Board. He had noticed Uiat experimental lengths were being put down in the Hutt County and he nad thought that it would be a good thing to get some such in Horowheuua. lie had not been under the impression at the time ol writing that a hot-mix could be used hut there were a number of other systems which might be tried out.

He was erf opinion that experiments carried out in the Horowhenua County would be of greatei value than if they were carried out in the Hutt Valley wjhere nobody would see them. The letter was received. SUPPORT FOR ROAD SCHEME. The Levin Chamber of. Commerce wrote conveying congratulation on the Council's road-seaimg scheme, and wishing them every success with the loan to be taken. COUNTY BY-LAWS. The Oroua County Council wrote that it was hoped to have the joint by-laws completed at an early date, but that these were held up to a certain extent through inability to obtain copies of new acts from the Government printer. The chairman stated that the position was. that if they could not get these by-laws by the end of the year, then they woufd have to go ahead and prepare separate by-laws of their own. The' counties had been hanging on for two years waiting for these joint by-laws and the position now was that if those responsible for getting them out, did not hurry, cue body after another would slip away. —Trie letter was received-
