The monthly meeting on Friday was attended by Crs. W. J. A. . McGregor (chairman), D. Teviotdale, F. J. Linscott, W. T. James, W." B Hopcroft, J. HY Smith, H. F. Blatch Jno. Horrell and Geo. Stuart, Otaitai, applied^ to have culvert across Riverton-Thorn-bury road lowered, the fall having been brought up. — Left to Member and Engineer to look into. Chas. Brown, Secretary Local Committee, Waimatuku, advised the mid; channel drainage -work was costing the settlers from 9/6 to 13/2 a chain and, as the work crossed the open roads spacing 8 chains, the Council was asked, to s,hare this cost. — The Council granted this subject to the* supervision of the Engineer. T. S. Muirhead, Waimatuku,' gave notice of damage done to his : farm ditches by silting up as^he result of drainage work on the mid-chahnel \ work without allowing for proper outfall at the lower end. The writei; advised he held the Council liable and would be compelled to take legal action to prevent resumption of work until outfall has been provided. — Letter referred to the Central Committee. •The Manager, Perpetual' Trustees Co. } . P. C. Weenink, Secretary, Southland Unemployment Executive Committee, advised it had been resolved "that no further applications for land drainage be accepted-- unless here is a definite prospect ,of men being available at an ' early date ,to undertake^ the -work." The writer advised tlie works already approved would take' over - 12 months to compete, while many jobs where labour was not available m the locality would not be done at all. The letter ' pointed out the improved subsidy of 50 per cent, cost of labour to allow applicants to do work' under 4B Scheme.— Noted, applicants to be advised to apply under 4B Scheme. Cr. Hopcroft pointed out where men were at present working the jobs could be completed. The same writer wrote by direction of the Committee conveying their ap-' preciation to the Council of the good work done by the. Engineer, Mr J. G. C. Baker with the drainage- and land improvement works' under No. Scheme. His comprehensive , report submitted ' was' Appreciated.— Members expressed the opinion this was very satisfactory. < ' ' The County Clerk, Southland County wrote m reference to their being approached by the Mpj "rlighways Board to form a scheme of Traffic Control. It was suggested the Southland and Wallace Counties _coopefate -m an appointment of- a Trafic Inspector, the Highways Board paying a£Z for £1 subsidy' o n salary and expenses. — The 'Council approved of the scheme but appointed the Chairman and Engineer to wait on the Southland County and finalise arrangements before the scheme 'is submitted to the Highways Board. The Engineer (Mr J. G. C. Baker) reported since last meeting the weather has continued fine and 'dry and road maintenance has been carried on uninterruptedly. In connection with Mr T. P. Dyer's application under the Southland Land Drainage Act for drainage 'relief for his land (Lot 1, L.T.P: HOT, , Block- 111, Centre Hill Survey District), through part of Mr E. J. Healey's land adjoining' (Lot 2). On 20th, September the Chairman (Cr,. McGregor) accompanied by. Crs. Blatch and Stroud, met Messrs Dyer and JHealey at Mossburn and inspected the location of the proposed drain; a conference was then held and a settlement" was made as fol-' lows: Mr Dyer is to have drain constructed up swamp running generally along the common boundary between Lots 1 and 2; the suggestion being made that the work be done by contract^ under Unemployment Scheme 4B ; Mr Healey will pay' up to wards ith cost of the lower 24 chains of the work. "The following No. 5 Unemployment Schemes are under way at- present: Donaldson's Drain, Alton; Te Wae Wae Settlement Drainage; Gait and Erskine's Drainage, Papjatotara ; _ McEwan's ,Drainge, Papatotara'; "Stalker's Channel, Gladfield ; Kane and Simon's Drainage, Scott's Gap; Kauri Stream Drain, Colac; Oraka Creek Drainage, Beck's Channels Waicola; Centre Road, Longwood; Barry Road, Orepuki; Skerratt and Meager Road, Pahia; Oraki Creek drainage, Pahia, has been stopped temporarily and •men are now on.Skerratt and Meager Road, Pahia. Work, on the Taunamau sea outfall, has not -yet V been started and the uncompleted -works (Stopped during,. the winter) , viz., Midchannel, Waimatuku,.- S.trathvale and Allenby Drainage; Lake George Outfall have not yet been restarted.
