EVENING SPORTS.

■ A glorious evening was experienc for the sports -on Friday, whi a very large attendance^ w present to witness keen racing ai V] novelty events by local competitor The keenest interest was shown m . the events and -.much unknown abili' t shown mi 'all departments. The o ganisation by the President, Secretai and executive memhers of the Otai tau Progressive League was excellei and the programme was gdt throug m good time. The entries were, vei numerous, but ,' the most attractiv part was the , fine friendly sportin " spirit evinced and the general acce_: tance of most of those who entefe • * for the events. 88 entries were re ceived m the 3-legged race, m whic' 53 couples accepted, the course beinj the full width of the football area The efficacy of the newly top-dresse< area was amply demonstrated here, a despite the heavy entry, only thre< spills were recorded. The threi children's events proved most novel the tyre race showing a good field o experts, who ' all saw the distanci <> out. The girls' and boys' walking race saw a divergence of styles, witl considerable skill appearing m more instances than the actual winners, , while the efforts to restrain from £ running were funny. The cycle events | were star -items, with ever-changing "positions among the leaders; all -com- " peting being full out all the time.. The Maiden Chop- was a fine event, " the contestants being excellently hant dicapped, .while the scratch man, W. ; f: Campbell,, got a reception on ? carving 'his out to gain* 3rd prize. . He cut. a beautiful log m fast time. The tug-o'-war was a strenuous item, which elicited tremendous excitement^ the result being one of the ysurpriz.es of the evening. * Credit is due. Mr Geo. A novel competition of guessing the; name representing the fat lamb as presented by Mr 'Flynn drew a good entry, Mr Duncan McGregor winning . to secure the lamb as the prize. ■ .
