NIGHTCAPS

SEND-OFF TO RECRUITS. The Coronation Hall was packed last Thursday evening to bid farewell to a quota of recruits from the district who left for Trentham with the last contingent. Mr J. Grant occupied the chair, and a varied pro- 1 gramme of songs arid recitations was contributed. to by Messrs Jno. Jamie, Jno. Grant, jnr., and Dr Fleming, while Messrs John Gray, A. Weir arid Dr Fleming delivered short addresses,'the latter being. very fine and' spirited, with the result that five men enlisted. The names were Messrs Geo. Dicksoh, Fred Sands, T. Prior, P, Flyn'n and G. P. Todd. Presentations were made, given by the Patriotic Committee, to all the recruits, and the chairman handed Messrs W. Wels,h, Allan Dunn, J. Crawford, E. Heald, Wm. Newton, J. Green and W. McLean each a parcel of necessaries for the equipment of a soldier, which -will make the memory of their friends at home very dear to' the soldier when on service. Mr Wm. Brazier, who was home on a week's leave from -Trentham, was present, but he had previously been the recipient of a presentation. Mr jLlewellan Lloyd, just /back' • from Samoa, was presented with a handsome leather hold-all, and Mr Fi;ed Sands, who is joining the mpunteds, and taking his own horse, was handed, a military bridle. A very pleasi ant gathering was brought to a close by the singing of the " National Anthem." The hall was then cleared for dancing, and a large" number stayed to enjoy the " lightj fantistic."
