Mr Archibald Miller.

At tlio age of 72 the above pioneer settler passed a\Vay afc Clifdoa on 24tli May. Mr Miller expired suddenly out m the field on his sons farm, his wife and several of his family being present. Mr Miller was of a robust type of settler and had done ' more than hts'share / m the conversion vi the wilderness into cultivated fields. He left Scotland. 52 years ago when only 19 years of age, and entered upon the somewhat arduous work of waggoning to the Lakes gold fields on his arrival. The call *' of tin) land wa"s early upon him .and he shortly left the carting and took a position as shepherd m tho North Otago District where he met tho lady wljo became his wife Miss J White of Otepopo and who survives him. Removing with his young wife to Southland he farmed for. a number of years at Gropers Bush, thereafter for many years at Wreys Bush and latterly atj Clifden where lie took up a large tract of land. His sons for several years have- taken over his farm and for 7 or 8 years Mr Miller has resided at Orawia. Two sons Jamea and Archibald are well known farmers m tho Clifden district while William has been for somo years m the North Island. His , widow has "the consolation of three sons three daughters and a large number of „ grandchildren, together .vith thatof a wide circle;, of friends, who appreciated \be deceased gentleman for his unassuming obur- *' tesy and genuine worth.
