The Public Works Department wrote m reply to the Council' s application for a subsidy of half the cost of maintaining ! the ferrj - at Tuatapere, that the application was duly considered by the ! M. Fitzgerald, Pahia, asked permis- * sion to erect a verandah m front of his shop, and also that he be granted 3uffi- ■ cient pipes to put m a culvert. — Granted. D. G. Hodgette, Tihaka, wrote asking that further work be undertaken on the * road there, so as to enable him to get < timber on to his section to build his house, i — Writer to apply to Public Works De- i partment. ] Mrs P. P. McKay, Grove Bush, again ] wrote drawing attention to the state of the road leading to her property. As it was impossible for nes to get to her seotion, an offer to clear the timber on the road to ] a width of 20ft at 10b per chain was made. The writer also asked that a large tree i that had fallen across the road be removed. ] — Engineer to report. W. B. Lowrie, Tihaka, wrote asking that steps be taken to have his Crown lands section line cleared. He offered to clear the stumps for the sum of £3. — Received. R. J. Diack, Winton, wrote that the contractor felling trees on to his boundary ■ fence at Tuatapere had not removed them. He asked that the trees be removed and tho fence repaired at once." — Left hi hands of Engineer. T. W. Kennedy, Otautau, asked permission to plough the roadlines adjacent to his fences. — Granted subject to usual conditions. Geo. Blondell, Wairaki Ford^ wrote that a well' on the ro.ad m his vicinity was a menace ty> trafii<?i and he offered to fill it m for the sum of £1 5s. — Received. Robt. Sutherland^Clifden, wrote that he had never received compensation for land taken for a road through his property, and suggested that he be. **** Wen the old road.— Received. .Jas. Hunter, Secretary Wairio Railway and Coal Qompany, Ltd., wrote that since the, construction of the line was begun they had been hampered by bad weather, and it would not be possible tos finish the line by the date arranged, October 18. The formation ds nearly finished, but the . ground is so soft that if they were ready to lay down the rails and sleepers, these } i would sink into the clay, They proposed, i therefore, to leave, the plate-laying for a couple oi months* jn the hope that there Would, be a period of dry weather allowing' the formation to harden. Brothenston, Lumsden, wrote suggesting that double pipes be put m for a crossing m Oreti street, which had repeatedly been washed away by the floods. —Engineer to report when m district. A petition, signed by nine ratepayers of Merrivale, was presented praying for work to be carried out on the Cameron-Maori Hill road, as it was m an impassable condition.—Left m hands of member for riding and engineer. The trustees of the Methodist Church parsonage, Otautau, asked for an outlet lor the water that collected on the sections.—Referred to Town Board. The Otautau Town Board wrote regarding, the Council's claim for quarter cost of repairs to Yellow Bluff bridge, that they could not see their way to pay more thau £20.— 0n the motion of Cr Buckingham, seconded by Cr Flynn, it was decided to offer to meet the Board on a date suitable to it to consider the proportion of the cost of upkeep of the bridge each body should pay, and m the event, of failure to come to an agreement the Government be asked to appoint a Commission to decide the matter. i J. J. Johns was granted an extension of time to complete gravelling the Line of Hundred road. W. J. Mills, Birchwood, asked permission to plough the roadline adjoining his property.— Granted. J. Stirling, Riverton, asked the Council to look into the matter of a person blocking the road into the Native Reserve at Riverton. A letter was enclosed from the Native Minister on the subject. — Engineer and Member to inquire. Wm. Watson, Pahia, renewed his request to have a portion of a road ckwed at Pahia. — Usual steps to be takem to comply with request. i Engineer's Report. «<wfe 5 n BiMer8 iMer reported aa follow*:— With the exception of surfacing no road work of any consequence had been done, lhe bridge gang, which is at present engaged strengthening the Thornbury bridge, have completed two small bridgea on the Merrivale road, and driven thei piles for a private bridge of two spans on Merrivale estate. Whije the bridge gang is m the locality of ThornlJary, I advise that a email bridge on the main road to Riverton and three others between Fairfax and Otautau be re-built. The contract for the repairs to tho Pourakino bridge has been lot, and the c-.Mlr^'tor started work this week.
