5 One of the most enjojable and sue- . cessfui race meetings held by the \V. I J.C. was that of Wednesday last. The weather conditions were perfect, the course m splendid order, and the arrangements Al, consequently the attendance was a record for the fixture. Many improvements have been com- ' pleted during the off season, and the ' course is up-to-date m every respect, 1 patrons being well looked after. The Nightcaps Brass Band was present and contributed an excellent programme of musical items during the afternoon. The sport was of a highly interesting nature and some exciting finishes were witnessed. District horses were very successful, those of Messrs F. Malcolm anl A. Pro van, with their home trained } animals, being very popular. The sum of £4701 was invested on the totalisator, an increase of £2018 on last year's figures. Mr Nat Bates, the popular President of club, who ha 3 held office since the foundation of the club, is to be congratulated on the success of the meeting, a great part of which is due to the manner m whioh Mr W. A. Saunders accounted for the duties of the secretaryship. The profit of the meeting should be a solid one, all sources of revenue being excessive, the gate receipts also proving record. Obolus led along the back with Field Gun m second place, At the home turn Obolus was well clear of the field, but before the distance was reached Field Gun caught him. The leader tired and Field Gun led almost to the post when Alfreda came with a fast run and won by the shortest of heads. Obolus was third two lengths away. Time 2miu 13secs.
