Cr Affleck objected to Otautau being^ assessed above Id ; the riding value had increassed £75,000. A pt-nny rate would produce within £43 • of last year. .. Cr Newton objected to Mararoa being rated only at fd, wben it was m debt, and he moved that there be 1 a one penny rate struck all over. • Seconded by the chairman. * j Cr Dyer, m speaking to, the amend- ; I ment, drew attention to the financial position of the various ridings on 80th June : Wairio was m oredit £92, and the other ridings were; m debt as: follows : Aparima £600, Orepuki £1198, Otautaft £844, Waiau £2207, 7 and Mararoa £592. He was favour--able to Otautau riding coming downy co Id, as they had their work well m hand Wairio riding, he considered should not be reduced: their roads were m a fnghtful ( condition,, and they should spend money on them instead of knocking off rates. Waiau, he thought, was m a bad financial position, and rate there could not be reduced ; fd was ample for Mararoa riding, as their valuation was so a& vanoed that the rate would produce £881 over last year* Cr King said he did not agree with 'Cr Dyer; he admitted his "riding being m debt, but he had more to spend on 10 miles of his roads than Or Dyer had m all his riding. — Amendment carried, rate struck at one penny all round, and * bf a penny for Charitable Aid Rate.
