Reid aged 11£ years, on 13th January, .1948, at the Whakatane River mouth swam 20 feet through the strong current to the rescue of a little boy who had fallen into one of the deep holes and had sunk for the second time. As soon as Reid reached him, he clutched Reid's neck. Reid broke the grip and struggled back with him to the shore. But for the timely action of Reid, there certainly would have been a drowning.—The lad was awarded the Bronze Medallion by the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand in June.
