RECREATION DEVELOPMENT

COMMITTEE FORMED FURTHER PROGRESS An important decision to form • a recreation ground development and improvement committee was made at a meeting of sports club's representatives, which was held on Tuesday evening for the purpose of furthering plans for the full development of the -ecreation ground. The committee would co-operate with the Borough in watc* ing the interests of sports clubs, and with the aid ol a special finance committee, consisting of two nominees from each club concerned, would be responsible for raising the finance required for the development work on the area, as recommended t 0 the council at a previous meeting. The convenor, Mr. 0. G. Jackson, occupied the chair, delegates being present from the Rugby football . Club; Hockey Club, League Chb and. Cricket Club. Athletic Club delegates were unavoidably detained at another . meeting, but have since concurred with resolutions passed. Officers Elected Officers elected were as follows : Chairman: Mr. C. G. Jackson. Secretary: Mr. S. Humphrey. Treasurer: Mr. A. M. Rose. Committee*: Messrs. J. S. Hickey, E. J. Wallis, A. D. L. Mac Lean, E. G. Snell, J. K. Somervell, C. Keheley, G. Potts, S. Littlejohn, C. Wilton and R. Riley. Messrs. Jackson and Hickey reported on the recent meeting with the Borough Council, advising that Mr. R. S. Martin, Counhad agreed to prepare specifications for tenders and to supervise the work, =md that the Council would be callr g tenders immediately the specifications were prepared. The Rugby Club's offer to contribute one third of the net cost of the development of the new area and to assume responsibility for the reasonable development of No. 1 area was approved and appreciated by the „mittee. it being realised that while the Rugby executive, as in organisation, would not be officially associated with the drive for funds, supporters of the code would be personally associated with the movement in the interests of sport generally.

Each club was asked to appoint two delegates to the finance committee, and arrangements for a joint meeting of both committees were finalised, the meeting to be held on Thursday, August 19th., in the Bowling Club Rooms at 7.30 p.m.

It was further request the council to appoint, at least one. representative to attend this and future meetings of the Recreation Ground Development and Improvement committee 'n order to act in a liaison capacity. Matters pertaining to finance Piui ground allocation Mere also 1 ullv discussed.

A-formal resolution requesting that the Borough Council be asked to consult this committee before" accepting any tender for the ground development was* earned. A recommendation for the guidance of the. Council, that this committee does not favour continuous grazing of the area, but would apnrove of grazing at selected periods of the year, was also carried.

After some discussion, Mr Sriell moved that in the event of a surplus of funds raised over and above the amount required for the development pf the new area, such surplus be devoted to the complete development of the whole area as recommended in the report submitted to the Borough Council, following a meet 1 ino of sports club delegates held on Jul v 25th., 1948.
