THE BEACH

BIG IMPROVEMENTS 1 WORK TO DATE Beach development and improvement has proceeded apace in recent weeks and the excellent progress matte already is very evident even from the cliff overlooking the area. The centennial park portion, including the swamp, and the camping ground has been filled and levelled and is now being covered' with several inches of topsoil, which in turn will be harrowed and levelled. The entire area will then be sown with suitable grass seed and it is expected to see a good sward of grass for the new camping and holiday season. Terracing work on the banks at the north-west- end of the beach near the Norfolk Bine lias already transformed the appearance of that portion. The future development of the area at the southern end has not yet been decided, the object in the meantime being to complete filling-. levelling and grassing. Next year suitable frees will be planted, to provide shade for picnickers etc., and to enhance the beauty of the beach. Plans for the ultimate development o 1 Centennial Park include a Band Soundshell with a large concrete area in front, suitable for dancing or skating and it is also aimed to provide moveable seating accommodation for open-air concerts or other public functions. With a fine lawn surface over the whole area (especially when the three abutting cottages are re* moved) and suitable shade trees, it is possible, even at this stage, to visualise the beautiful and attractive environment _ot onr beach in the future and the Seaside Society deserves full credit for its progressive and energetic policy.
