Street Mart. The Opunake Tennis Club is holding a Street Mart on Monday December 23rd. The stall convenors are Mesdames Johnston,, Malcolm, Fagan, Jackson and Miss N. Watt. Donations of produce, cooking'etc., will be gratefully accepted. Tennis Dance. The Opunake Tennis Club is holding a Gala Dance on Wednesday, December 18th., in the Drill Hall, Opunake. There will be novelties galore and a great night is assured all dance lovers. Roll up and help 'the Tennis Club. Funds are for two new courts. School €a!a. Today is gala day. It is hoped that parents and others v/ill turn up iu large numbers _to see the programme of physical education, and the dlisplays of the pupils' work. Side shows have been. organised by the high school boys', ■ and afternoon tea vill be provided. Presbyterian Bazaar. The Opunake Presbyterian Church Bazaar Will be held in the Drill Hall, Opunake on Monday next. There will be the usual cake, produce and sewing stalls in the afternoon to be followed by an evening programme of suitable entertainment. School Service. Parents will no doubt appreciate the advantage of McElroy's School Store, where school lunches and pies are concerned. It is not always convenient to send the kiddies off to school with a home-made lunch and McElroy's will ensure your youngsters are veil satisfied. Annua! Rubbish Clean-up. Wednesday, December 11th., will be Rubbish Clean-up Day in Opunake. Residents are asked to co-operate by placing all rubbish on the kerb before 8 a.m. on that day. No hedge clippings ox garden refuse will be collected. An inspection consistent with the by-law relating fo Sanitation and the accumulation of rubbish will be strictly observed. Memorial Cross, The announcement of the award of a Memorial Cross _to Mothers and Widows of married men who died or were killed on active service, or whose quent deaths were attributed to war service was made this week. Mothers of single men would also be eligible for the cross, while Mothers and Widows, whose sons or husbands had died in New Zealand on home service during the war would also be eligible provided that their deaths were attributed to the war. Railway Revenue Down. An operating loss of £81,032 i-> shown in the period from April 1 to October 12 in the current financial year. Gross expenditure amounted to £8,219,864, and revenue to £8,138,832. There was an operating loss of £48,723 on the North Island main line and branches, one of £286,901 on the South Island main line and branches, and one of £13,275 on the Nelson line, making a total railway loss of £348,899. Miscellaneous and subsidiary services, however, showed a net profit of £267,867. which reduced the overall loss to £81,032.

Road Safety Campaign, Reporting on the education of school children in road safetyrules, the cbjief patrol officer of the Automobile Association (South Taranaki), Mr. T. D. Leatliam, stated that last school ! iH-hi 79 schools, had been visited. Lectures totalling- Hi had been delivered to 4950 pupils. As an incentive to parents and children tc take more interest in the proper maintenance of bicycles for safety, white strips had been painted by patrol officers on tLe rear mudguards of 1162 bicycles belonging to school children. Scats on Outward Planes.

Although all through bookings on the Auckland-New Ply-mouth-Wellington service of the National Airways Corporation are filled for the Christmas period, seats on planes travelling outwards from New Plymouth are still available on some days. Peats on planes travelling to Wellington are still procurable for 10 days dulling the period between December 17 and January 8, and more may be made available from the Wellington headquarters. On the Auckland rervice the postition is not so good, seats being available on oiily two days during the period.
