THE Opunake Times Established 1894 Office: Fox St., Opunake. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 6, 1946. ACCOMMODATION

ONCE again the vexed question of lack of accommodation is forcibly brought before the public notice. In the advertising columns of this issue the Opunake School Committee has entered an urgent:plea to residents in and around ,Opunake, for assistance in accommodating teachers in the new school term. The headmaster, Mr ; . S. B. Dunn, at a recent R.S.A. meeting, stated that with the. "sharp increase in school attendance, it was anticipated tliat thj£ staff would probably rise to 19, of whiten number for7woiild.be lady teachers. The R.S.A. has tackled the problem:,, courageously, but the time has now arrived for a concerted effort by local bodies and organisations directly concerned or affected,, (and this would no doubt blanket every important organisation in the area) in order that something satisfactory, either temporary or permanent, might be achieved immediately to relieve this acute problem. A suggestion put forward at that same R.S.A. meeting, for a survey of houses in the town which are .not fully occupied, falls into line with the School Committee's plea, and citizens who come under this category, With no valid reason for allowing the unoccupied portion of their houses to remain untenanted, are failing in a vital public duty under present day conditions. All we can do however, is hope that the School Committee will receive sympathetic consideration—but the housing problem generally, is a different matter. The war no longer allows the excuse to shelve urgent tasks, and_ ho'nie building in Opuhake tojday] is No. 1 priority. The lead given by v the R.S.A. should be backed solidly by united, vigorous and immediate support.
