FORMATION IN OPUNAKE

In the coming winter season, a sport which at one time Uad a large number of local adherents is to be. re-introduced to Opunake, and the Kiwi Hockey Club, which was formally estab-

lished. at an enthusiastic meeting held at Mr. C. Harding’s residence on Wednesday, is to be the medium. Sufficient numbers of players, some experienced, others novices, are available for the formation of a team, which will immediately assume senior status for competition purnoses. While

this first stop mav appear somewhat ambitious, it is probable that the team will he largely comprised of players with previous experience, and that a combination capable of upholding i 0 own in the competitive field will •Mudly be developed. Presiding over a good attendance of interested persons, Mr. Harding asked the meeting to consider the formation of a club, and the formal motion to this effect was adopted. Penney and treasurer,

Mr. J. Pearson; committee, president, club captain and secretary, Messrs. R. A. Coadj D. Muschamjk T. Blackman; coach, Mr. R. R. Penney; selectors, Messrs. C. N. Thayer. C. Harding and Penney. After reviewing the probable financial obligations of the club in the coming year, the meeting agreed upon the fixing of Subscriptions at the rate of 5/-, and decided to enforce rigidly tne rule that only financial members will be eligible for selection for teams.

Application is to he made to the Borough Council for permission to use the newly-established sports area at the Domain for a hockey ground. This area, which was levelled and grassed early last year, is now practically con. solidated, and it is. considered that us© of it will improve its condition. Although a considerable amount of work will be required to produce the necessary playing condition, members considered that it would be eminent- !\- suitable to the purpose. The mowing of the grounds was referred to Messrs. Muschamp and (load, who, together with Mr. R. Clare, will also attend to the matter of nets. A working bee is (a be. held on Anril 2, commencimr at 9.30 a.m. Practices will be commenced on April. 15, and the initial training period will he preceded by a blackboard giving the broad rudiments of the game, by experienced players on April 12 it 7 p.m. The arrangements of such friendly games as may be organised before the commencement of comnetirion play was left in the hands of the club captain. The purchase of halls also was referred to Mr. Penney. Mr. C. N. Thayer was thanked for his offer to donate, a trophy for the most improved player in file season, and .appreciation of Mr. and Mrs. Hardin©- in allowing the use of their residence for the recent meetings also was expressed.
