OPUNAKE TIMES “Speaks for the District.” TUESDAY, MARCH 8, 1938. LOCAL AND GENERAL

improving Roads — Further progress in the bormigh reading plan "’as made yesterday when a start was made with the re-sealing of Main Street in the business area. Si nee this portion of the highway is already of standard width, little preparatory work was required, hut it will he some time before sealing activities are commenced on that part which is to he extended in width. The sealing of Lavard Street from Main Street to the hospital has been completed.

Harvest Home Ball — Free bus services have been provided for Opunake patrons who attend the ninth annual Harvest Home Hall at the Pihama Hall tomorrow evening. Having a reputation which establishes it as one of the major social attractions of the year, the function this year marks the opening of the new dancing season, and it is to he expected that it will have a popular appeal over a wide area. Hooker’s Band will provide the dance music in the swing style-.

Old Man Winter Back — It was a grim reminder that Old Man Winter is lurking in the near background which awaited those who were early astir on Sunday and who were outdoors during the rest of the day. After a “rehearsal” on Saturday, bleak winds swept across the country to send the thermometer mercury into hasty retreat and temperatures were in sharp contrast with those of the previous week. Inland, there was a light frost, but coastal temperatures did no more than approach the freezing point. In these conditions, surf bathing was by no means popular, and the water was practically deserted on Sunday. Temperatures again rose yesterday, however, and are now practically at the normal level.

Townspeople’s GenerositySporting interest is seldom if ever lacking in Opunake, and many sports bodies find their support to a considerable extent among the business people and residents of the town. So many calls for financial assistance are made, however, that it is a fine tribute to their generosity and interest that few requests are refused, and year by year they contribute largely to funds which provide sports facilities for the town. A case in point is that of the Opunake Amateur Athletic Club, an organisation maintaining a bare existence on the small amount of funds at its disposal through members’ subscriptions and special effort, but lacking the necessary finance to undertake any major scheme. When the club proposed to hold an in-ter-eluh meeting, however, townspeople gave willingly and handsomely in order that an array of trophies worthy of (lie occasion might be secured and the club in not unappreciative of the assistanee offered.
