OBITUARY

o MiR ALFRED E. BAYLIS AGED 81 YEARS. Another link in the chain of Taranaki pioneers has been broken by tile death of Mr Allred Edwaui Baylis, ol Rotorua, aged 81 years, winch look place on Tuesday alternoou.

The late gentleman, who was very well known and greatly respected by all who knew him, was born in Birmingham, England, and airived in these parts in the very early days as a young man. He joined up with the Aimed Constabulary which was stationed in Upuuake and alter several years’ service, took up land on the Patiki Road, Pihama, which he farmed successfully for mauy years.

About 17 years ago deceased left Taranaki and settled in Rotorua, taking a small holding where he carried on an up-to-date orchard and market garden. His vegetable and flower garden was one of Mr Baylis’ main hobbies and tJxe results achieved through constant attention and knowledge of what and when to grow, wore favourably commented on by prominent nurserymen.

His health up to about 12 months ago had been remarkably good, but increasing age began lo take toll and a few months ago he commenced to fail, his death being expected by the family. Mr Baylis married a member of another well kown pioneer family, Miss Ada Mann who pre-de-ceased him over 30 years ago. He leaves an adult family, members of which are Mrs. D. Neagle (Taihape), and five sons, Messrs George, Flunk and Reginald (Opunake), Harry (Otakeho) and Phillip (Feilding). There are 26 grandchildren and one greatgrandchild.

The interment which was private, took place at Rotorua yesterday, the five sons bearing their father to his last earthly resting place.

Lie sympathy of residents of the district will go out to all members of the family in their sad loss.
