CRICKET

LOCAL CLUB'S MEETINC. PROSPECTS FOR SEASON. There was a good attendance of members and intending members at the meeting of the Opunake Cricket Club held last Tlmrsday, and judging from the number of apologies received, the prospects for the new season are distinctly good. At least a dozen new members have since intimated their intention of playing cricket this season and although most of these have had little experience of the game, nevertheless they are keen and enthusiastic and should tend to strengthen both the Wednesday and Saturday teams. Another pleasing factor is that most of the member are young players who should, with good coaching, give excellent displays by the beginning" of the season. The club is fortunate in having experienced players of the calibre of Burgess, Dr. Griffin, Cundy and Rev Roberts.

A lesson learnt last year was the necessity for a good pitch for practicing purposes. If the teams are to meet with any success in competitive cricket this season, there is only one obvious thing to do, and that is to put in some solid work on the ground available, the earlier the better. The present time is not too early for a beginning, for the ground, after the recent rain, will be easy to work and at least two tip-top pitches could be prepared. Last year, not only the pitches but also the outfield was comparatively rough, whereas a gang of players with the heavy roller available could have easily improved both, to a considerable extent, if the work had been done while the ground was soft. Another point decided upon at the meeting was the election of Cundy as coach. This player has had several season's experience in first-class cricket and by winning the O'Brien bat last season proved his ability as a batsman. Cundy is keen on the game and all players, especially the younger members, will have a great opportunity of learning 1 how to. wield the willow before the season commences in earnest.

The report shows that the club is in a sound position financially and at present the committee are endeavouring to arrange a means whereby the travelling expenses can possibly be reduced. The club is to be congratulated on Entering two teams in the competitions and although some members are doubtful of any outstanding success, there is every hope of a good season's cricket.
