BASKETBALL DANCE

FUNCTION AT OAONUI.

A LARGE ATTENDANCE. The grand dance which took place at the Oaonui Hall on Wednesday night last, proved a great success. The function was in aid of the Oaonui Basketball Club, which will benefit greatly, tin; sum of £2O being taken at the door. 0 Visitors were present from Eltham, Kaponga and the surrounding districts. The 3 free buses which left Opunake were filled to the utmost with a gay crowd out to enjoy themselves and they were not disappointed. The dancing which was in the capable hands of Mr. L. Purvis went off well, he carrying out his work in a very capable manner. The music which was supplied by Henderson's Star Band proved up to their usual good standard, encores being much in demand. The foxtrot competiton which drew a fair number of entries was keenly contested and proved a hard task for the judge (Miss Peggy Wylde of Eltham), the winning couple being Mr. Whalen (Kapuni) and Miss O. Barlow (Morrinsvillo) witll Mr. L. Mathews (Opunake) and Miss jM. Haskill (Opunake) runners-up. Several other competitions were also held winners being as follows ; Monte Carlos: Mr. J. Groich and Miss N. Perry; Mr. J. Boniface and Miss W. Clegg; Mr. L. Mathews and Miss I). Hingley; Mr. Morrison and M iss M Pennington. Luck Spots : Mr. J. Greich and Miss M. Byars; Mr. Whalen and Miss Barlow. Several extras were played during the evening those contributing were, Miss M. Glengarry, Mrs. J. Purvis, Mr. S. Nuku, and Messrs Hooker and Brooker, duet. The committee responsible for the great success of the function was Messrs L. Purvis (chairman), R. Johnston. L. Johnston, J. Zurcher, P. Willers, J. McFie and R. Seeker (secretary) .
