TRANSPORT REGULATIONS
PROROSED ALTERATIONS. The Transport Department, Wellington, forwarded a circular to the Egmont County Council, containing several of the proposed heavy motorvehicle regulations which are to be substituted for the motor-lorry regulations. inter alia, in connection with the. classification of roads, it was stated that it is proposed to give a 50 per cent, increase all through the scale so far as gross weights are concerned to the multi-axled type of heavy motor-vehicle. This proposal is based on investigations into impacts of motor vehicles of the two-axle and multi-axle type. It was also noticed that the axle loads proposed to be allowed*to the latter were considerably below those allowed to the former. Dissatisfaction was expressed by councillors at the omission of the Egmont County official, Inspector Pickering, from a list of approved testing officers which was enclosed. 'The clerk was advised to inquire into the omission. Touching on the recent renewal of driving licenses, Cr. Tosland said that there was a large number of questions tm the form which were not needed. What was needed was a knowledge of the rules of the road. He suggested that automobile associations should appoint inspectors to patrol the roads and take action against people who travelled recklessly, and who wilfully cut corners. Cr. Gibson agreed that certain of the questions appeared unnecessary.
