Light Frost at Gisborne,' 1 1 light irost ox 1.0 uegrees was. registered at Burton Field, Gisborne, yesterday morning.
Temperatures. Worth island temperatures at 9 o’clock yesterday morning were as iollows Auckland,. 58 degrees; Tauranga, 62; Opotiki, 55; Gisborne, 62; Napier, 57; Wellington, 58.
Pig Sale Alteration, The attention o£ farmers and others is drawn to the alteration in date of the usual fortnightly pig sale. On . account of next Monday being Labour Day the sale will be held on Thursday of ' this week (October 24). A full bench of export buyers will be operating as' usual.
Ngaruhoe Erupting. A message from Wanganui yesterday states that Mount Ngaruhod which has been active recently was still erupting yesterday. Clouds of grey smoke, rising from the crater could bo seen from the Chateau. The mountain has been active for a month and ash is lying on the slopes and also on Mount Tongariro. Most of the snow lias disappeared from both mountains. It was reported on Sunday that Ngaruhoe was crumbling near the top.
Double Drowning. A man and a boy were drowned near the mouth of the Waipaoa River shortly- after noon yesterday as a result of a Hat-bottomed dinghy capsizing in a squall. The victims of the tragedy were: Mr. Jlihai a Wilson, aged 55 years, widower. Joe Pohatu, aged 9 years. There were six persons in the boat at the time, and some of them were, rescued in an exhausted condition. The others were Messrs. William Porou, Ihi Raihana, Earl Parsons- and Mahu Pohatu. The last-named is. the father of the boy who lost his life.
Timber Exports to Australia. The absence of American and Scandinavian supplies of timber on the Australian market is reflected in the increased Australian demand for New Zealand timber. This development has improved the West Coast timber prospects, and district millers arc able to dispose of the surplus, after meeting New Zealand demands,- to buyers in Australia, Australian orders are being received regularly. , Airman Governor-General. The appointment of Air-MarshaJ Sir Cyril Newall marks the first occasion that New Zealand has had an airman as a Governor-General. Since the last war it has had an Admiral of the Fleet, Viscount Jellicoe of Scapa, a noted army general in General Sir Charles Fergusson, an expert in agriculture in Lord Bledisloe, and an army leader in the present Governor-General, Viscount Galway, who succeeded Lord Bledisloe at the beginning of ]935. It is recalled that in Air-Marshal Sir Philip Game New South Wales also had an airman as Governor.
