YACHTING

OPENING DAY OCTOBER 28 As the opening day of the yachting season approaches, there is much activity in the various back yards where the yachts have spent the winter. Robin (Salt),. Manene (Hill) Q.T. (E. Salt), are already in the water. Silver Wings (Talbot), Le.lani (Laimer), Marie (Herewini), are ready for launching. Flying Cloud (Peagram), Phantom (Cederman), Pop Eye (Brownie), Opali (Chatfield), are in the painters’ hands, but all will be ready for the first race.

This year the club members are very enthusiastic, that little bit of extra finish being put on that seems to make the boat faster. Some have gone so far as to get new boats which shows that interest in th.s kind of sport never lags. Mr. Larmer has bought Endeavour from Mr. Colin Carruthers, and Master lan Palmer has- taken over Mr. Larmer’s Leilani. Mr. E. Salt is buying Endeavour’s sails and rig as Mr. Larmer will be ' using Leilani’s on Endeavour, Master Jan Palmer taking over Mr. Salt’s sails. Of special interest to all is the new 14ft. class boat Mr. Bob Carruthers, with the assistance of his crew, and the advice of the spare parts, is building. This boat promises to have a pretty good turn of speed, and once the correct trim is found, will be very hard to beat. The work going into this boat is a credit to Mr. Carruthers, and as we saw when he built Endeavour, his heart goes into the job and nothing is skimped. Mr. “Sally” Gordon is a new member, although he~ has had the yachting bug for a good while. Be is building a 12ft. 8 inch (Idle along)x

class boat and from reports to hand is making a very good job of it.

The first race of the season will start at about 2 p.m. on October 28 (Labour Day), and will start on the “Mark Foy” system, the handicap being given at the start, the first boat winning. Readers are invited to go along and see the “Old” Salt open the season by crossing the line first.
