Shipping, The m.v. Waiotahi left Auckland yesterday and is expected to arrive at Opotiki to-morrow. She will leave for Auckland on Thursday. Anniversary Dance. The 'Woodlands' Anniversary dance will bo held in the Woodlands Hall to-night.- Mr. J. Mannix’s orchestra will supply the music. Engineer Indisposed. The county engineer, Mr. W. W. Upton was unable,to attend Friday’s council meeting owing to indisposition/ The council expressed- sympathy with Mr. Upton.

Golf Dance. The Waimana Golf Club will hold a dance on Thursday night, the proceeds from which will go to the Patriotic Funds. The music will be supplied by Mcrv. Meiklejohn and his Havana Boys. Women’s Auxiliary. An executive meeting of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Patriotic Society will be held in the Parish Hall on Thursday night. The meeting will be followed by a general meeting and a working bee. As part of the Hew Zealand centennial celebrations, flags will be flown on all post office building tomorrow (Wednesday), October 9, to ccnimem orate the first landing in New Zealand of Captain Cook. - A monument .marks the spot of the first landing on the eastern banks ol the Tauranganui River at Gisborne, just below the Kaiti freezing works. One-Dog Fight. •A dog fight which occurred in Church Street yesterday drew the usual crowd of interested spectators who were treated to the strange sight of a dog fighting'itself. The light started off in the usual way with two dogs having a rough anil tumble, but one dog was called off by his master. The other dog,’ however, was apparently unaware that the fight was over. Seeing a leg il took a firm grip', but was quite unaware! that it had seized its own leg. Yelping vigorously the dog nipped harder and spun around in circles trying to get the upper hand. Suddenly Jetting go with the apparent intention of trying another method of attack the dog appeared rather surprised to find its “opponent” had vanished into thin air.
