SMALLER SCHOOL GRANTS

PROBLEM FOR COMMITTEE HIGH SCHOOL IMPROVEMENTS School committees throughout the Dominion have quite, a problem in looking after their schools and the Opotiki Committee in common with others is also faced with difficulties. Despite the steady rise in the cost of school facilities, the Hawke’s Bay Education Board has suffered a reduction in the Department of Education grant for the maintenance of school buildings. It is understood that all other board’s arc feeling tho effect of the pruning hook. With the opening of the new High School at an early date the Opotiki Comm.ttce will be faced with further problems. Some, of the burden of ground preparation has already been taken off the committee by the action of interested citizens who have already done work at the school and intend to do other work. The fence along St. John Street has been planted with native shrubs and trees by Mr. S. T. Keen. These trees numbering well over a hundred, were donated by Mr. N. Potts, who supervised the planting. When established a fine plantation should result of which the school should be very proud. lurther plantings aie anticipated. Rose-beds, the plants for which are being donated by Mr. G. Lisk, will also be put down in the front of the buildings. It is hoped to finally have the whole area surrounded by native and other trees.
