THE COST OF PAPER.

Newspaper proprietors are again at their wit's end to know how to deal with the contracted supply of newspaper upon which to print their breakfast' and tea-table luxuries, as the case may be. The owners of the big dailies of the four centres do not appear to be as anxious about the price as they are about the supply. At their recent conference it was thought that if the newsprint paper conditions do not soon show a more hopeful aspect it is feared that considerable condensation will necessarily have to be resorted to, inasmuch as a section of the large daily newspaper display advertisements will have to be counted out of their folds. Newsprint has increased in price from a prer-war rate of £11 per ton to j £95, and the compass points to a s'tiU j further "rise. The Provincial newspapers are also perplexed to "know how to cope with the position, and although on n smaller scale to the metropolitan papers, they are equally concerned. No.t only has the price of newspaper gone up '-so high, but all classes of paper, and everything else used in the production of typography has taken a corresponding leap into almost unapproachable regions. Some papers of late have been compelled to cease publication, .through no 'other cause than expenditure and made-* dilate supplies of paper. Yet, on the face of .the enormous prices facing newspaper proprietors they have advanced the prices of their newspapers very little. Those who find it necessary to have printing done should no!: hesitate as to the propriety of the prices quoted to them, for they can see for themselves that charges cannot be otherwise under present conditions.
