BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING.

The usual monthly meeting of the above Council was held on Thursday evening and was presided over by His Worship the Mayor, Mr W. J. Towers. The following councillors were also present: Messrs P. E. Brenan, Deputy Mayor, W. J. Taylor, T. P, Vuglar, F. A. Balcke, A. Fielder, and F. E. Flatt, and the town clerk, Mr W. H. Mahony.

Apologies for absence were received from Crs. Bush and Graves. -

CYANIDE FOR EXTRACTION CO

Cr. Brenan explained the action he took, in the absence of the Mayor in wiring to the various Ministers with reference to the supply of cyanide for the Paeroa-Waihi Gold Extraction Company. He stated that since the wires the Minister of Supplies had made arrangements with the Waihi Gold Mining Co. to keep the Extraction Co. supplied until its own shipment was received. It was decided to write and thank the Ministers for their replies received to the wires forwarded to them, and also for their action in the matter. The action of the deputy mayor was endorsed by a resolution of the Council. ;• ELECTRIC SCHEME. A letter was received from the Paeroa Chamber of Commerce with reference to the Tauranga Electric Scheme, and it was decided to thank the chamber for the information received. BENNETT STREET. H. R. Young wrote complaining that cattle had considerably damaged the track in'Bennett Street leading Ito his house, and that the watertables have been clogged. He, asked that five cubic yards of screenings be spread on the track and the watertables be cleared as early as possible. A letter was also read from Mr F. S. Budd complaining about the same street. . The letters were received and mati ters referred to the works committee for attention. On the resolution of the Mayor it was decided that the letters be handed to the Borough solicitor to be put before the Magistrate when cases of wandering stock were being, heard, so that he could see what the Council had to suffer through wandering cattle. OLD TE AROHA ROAD. Mrs A. J. Thorp wrote bringing under the notice of the Council the unprecedented state of that part of the Old Te Aroha Road which is in the borough. She stated that ever since this road has been in existence (40 years ago) the water has not lain on this road for such a length of time. t The letter was received. The Mayor stated that the work was nearly completed. EARTH FROM ROADS. H. Poland, secretary of the Ohinemuri Jockey Club, wrote asking the Council's permission to take spoil from the roads convenient to the Paeroa racecourse for the purpose of filling in a portion of the saddling paddock. I Cr. Balcke said that Mr E. Shaw had agreed to grade the road and leave it in good order, and that per.mission had already been given. The action of the works committee was confirmed. REBATE OF RATES ASKED FOR. B. Gwilliam, secretary, applied to the Council for exemption of rates on the property of the Hauraki Agricultural and Pastoral Association, held for show purposes. The Mayor said that if this is for the showgrounds only he would be in favour of it, but would not be in favour of the saleyards being exempted, j

Several members spoke on the matter, but as it was uncertain as to

whether the shows would be held in the Association's own paddocks the matter was deferred for one month, the Association to supply further particulars.

J. Kennedy applied for a rebate of rates on two properties in Paeroa that had been unoccupied for some time. ■

It was decided to rebate the rates provided applicant complied with the necessary regulations in the matter.

TAYLOR'S AVENUE

J. Young, railway land officer, referring to the consent of the Paeroa Borough Council to take over and maintain for road purposes two portions of railway reserve at Paeroa, containing 20.6 perches, more or less, and 1 rood. 22.8 perches, more or less, respectively, informed the Council that a proclamation dated Bth inst. has been published in the New Zealand Gazette, No. 88, of 20th inst,, allocating this land to the purposes

of a road-

It was decided that the letter be received and the Department thanked for all the trouble it had gone to.

SHORTAGE OF TRUCKS

The Railway Department wrote acknowledging the Council's letter in the matter and stated that although there was a shortage of trucks in April last the matter was now rectified. RAILWAY CATTLE YARDS. The District Engineer of Railways, wrote stating that inquiries are being made with reference to the Council's letter re the drainage from the cattle yards at the Paeroa ed.DOMAIN GROUNDS. Cr. Fielder asked the Mayor if any authority had been given to Mr Hamilton to allow stock to be turned into the Domain. To this the Mayor replied in the negative, and said that he felt sure, although he had not seen Mr Hamilton, that no authority had been given to anybody to • turn cattle into the grounds. Mr Hamilton was too proud of the grounds to allow them to be used as a grazing paddock. UPKEEP OF PUKE ROAD. It was resolved that the ' town clerk and foreman go into the cost of the maintenance of the Puke Road, and that a claim, be made on the Waihi Borough for its share towards the cost. , !
