GENERALLY JFAVOURED.

OPINIONS OF LOCAL BODIES. '

At the Ohinemuri County Council meeting yesterday replies were received from the following local bodies in answer to the resolution of the Council that the Government take ever and maintain all main roads. Those who favour the proposal are as follows : —Counties Kaitieke, Cook, Kawhia, Taranaki, Thames, Opotiki, Hokian,ga, Hutt, Kiwitea, Whakatane, Coromandel, Whangarei, Wairba, Clifton, Bay of Islands, Waikohu, Hobson. The Coromandel County, suggested that the scheme of "Good Roads League" be considered before any action is taken.

The . Hawke's Bay County Council did not favour the Government control, but strongly favours Government largely subsidising amounts spent by local bodies.

The Waimate West County considered the proposal a most unfair one.

The Rangitikei County considered the time not opportune for discussing the matter.

The Patea County declined to support the proposal.

The Hawera County Council disapproves as their own. roads are the best in the Dominion and it would be unfair for them to contribute through the consolidation fund towards the reads in other districts which have not heloed themselves.

The Waipukurau County Council considered that as the matter is receiving the earnest attention of the Farmers' Union as well as the local bodies, it will be thoroughly ventilated in the right quarter at the right time.

The following bodies received the circular and decided to take no action : County Councils—Waitomo, Manawatu, Featherston, Akitio, Kaivanga, Manakau. Boroughs—Patea, Mt. Eden.

CRITERION THEATRE—TO-NIGHT.

The Fisk Jubilee Singers will appear to-night at the Criterion Theatre. The Fisk Jubilee Singers have earned a world-wide reputation, not so much, perhaps, on account of the merit of their performi-nv..s, jjreat as this undoubtedly is, ba r because of the unique character of their enter, tainment, which charms by its novelty in method and the quaint sweet music of the old 'plantation songs, which haunt the memory for long after they have been once heard. A deep religious fervour breathes through many of the melodies, but the coons area simple-hearted, joyous folk, whose broad humour is always near the surface and never long restrained, even on serious occasions. It is some years now since the company ■ visited these shores, and they are certain of a warm welcome" here. Miss Belle Gibbons, the lady baritone, so well remembered by her phenomenal voice, is still a prominent member of the company and the musk- is in the capable hands of Professor C. A. White.

The box plan for the Paeroa season is at Harris.
