THE PROPOSED LOAN.

COUNTER-PETITIO&. RECEIVED.

At the meeting of the Council yesterday a petition was received signed by thirty-two ratepayers against inclusion of their properties in connection with the poll on the proposal to borrow £3000 for roading purposes. They pointed out that the idea was to spend £2300 of the £3000 on three roads lying to the south of Ohinemuri River, and they would receive absolutely no benefit from this expenditure. The petition went on to say : It is also proposed to allocate £250 to contingencies. The balance of £422 is to be expended on the Puke to Hubbard's Road and the Goldfields Road. The former has just been formed with a Government grant, and should .be gravelled by a further Government grant as it is chiefly for the benefit of the Netherton settlers. The other road is of no value to anyone except the three settlers residing along it. From this statement of facts we contend it is grossly unfair to ask us to pay interest and sinking fund for the next 36 years on" £3000 when only £422 is of any benefit to us." The following signatures were attached :—P. R. Hubbard, P. R. Hubbard for trustees late Captain Hubbard, D. Courtney, W. Ganley, J. Galvin, H. McCormick, J. W. Thorburn, Pi Ryan, W. H. Waite, S. E. Waite, J. H. Benney, E. E. Benney, E. Simpson, R. J. Simpson, R. Patterson, Arch. White, F. A. Ryde, H. J. Ferry, A. P. Kennedy, S. McKenzie, James Barrett, Ellen Barrett, Catherine Treanor, M. Robson, Ida Faulder, M. A. Nathan, H. Poland, W. G. Marsh, Thos. P. Vuglar, C. H. Millar, Martha *Shaw.

Cr. > Keeling moved that the petition be received and discussed at the next meeting. A certain number of those who had signed the petition were not conversant with the position.

Cr. Laughlin seconded the motion. He thought they were absolutely wrong when they say that this road was only for the good of the Netherton settlers. It was all nonsense.

The resolution was carried
