"KEEP OF THE GRASS."

[To the Editor.]

Sir—Touching the matter of Mr E. E. Gillman's complaint of cattle making a camping ground near his residence, he tails to realise that the cattle flatter I his good taste and sound judgment in picking such a salubrious site tor his abode. I deny that lam the owner of the cattle in question, but I. endorse • Darwin's theory that " instinct is

stronger than reason," and the instinct that impels the brute beast to choose an elevated, healthy, and sheltered situation for rest proves that the spot is an

ideal one

Mr Gillman lives by a main arterial route to the cattle market, and it is questionable whether he will not always be subject to some inconvenience, for on the date ot his complaint I saw a ] hundred head of cattle that came by rail from Hawera en route to Hikutaia take to his footpath during a violent rain storm. The result can be easier imagined than described. Another cause for the sloppy state of his road is the number of cyclists who ride along the footpath. Perhaps Mr Gillman would provide the timber necessary for a set or two of cross rails along it. Enough said. l - $ Now, coming to the wail of a " Mother," which appeared in your issue of 27th inst. on this subject, does "Mother" think that the Mayor and Councillors can or' should control the mewing of cats, the barking of dogs, or the lowing of cows ? " Mother " cer~, tamly shows poor judgment in meander- ! ing about' in the long grass with a little ' child at the, bewitching hour ot midnight. I would suggest that she apply to the Council for a wet nurse' to attend the " wee bairnie " while she indulges in a shilling's worth of love, ecstatic thrills, and hilarious efferescence at the picture show. She may yet find herselt 1 compelled to take to the " muddy road " on account of the invasion of the tootpath by long grass.—l am, etc.,

R. Whitten,
