OVERDUE CONTRACTS.

ACTION BY COUNTY COUNCIL

The question of contracts not being completed in the specified time was discussed by the Ohinemuri County Council at its meeting last week. Mr Corbett said that the time for Bain's contract at Waikino was up on. the 15th of last month, but the work was not finished yet, and the metal was blocking up the road. The work had been hung up for six weeks, and parts of the roads were exceedingly dangerous. The work should not have been delayed, but it seemed that the contractor had done practically as he liked. If the work was not quickly completed, the contract should be cancelled. The engineer (Mr Bray) said that on 25th November he wrote to Bain about the contract (road protection works at Waikino.) "In reply to a question, the engineer said that three weeks would be reasonable time to give in which to finish the contract. . Mr Franklin moved that the contractor be given until the 21st inst to finish the contract; if the work is not completed by that time the contract to be cancelled and the deposit forfeited, and fresh tenders invited for the work. This was seconded by Mr Marrinan and was carried. In reply to Mr Strange, the engineer ! said that the only other contract in a similar position was that ot Treanor for work on the Mill Road. He had given Treanor notice to go on with the work.

Mr Strange moved that the Council authorise the engineer to cancel the contract if it is not completed according to the terms of the engineer's letter.
