The Ohinemuri Gazette. FRIDAY, DEC. 2, 1910. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

A girl to assist with housework is advertised for.

A six-roomed house in Paeroa, with all conveniences is advertised to let.

Mr J. Farrell, architect to the Auckland Board of Education, who has been on a business visit to Paeroa, returned to Auckland by the express train yesterday.

A special meeting of the Paeroa Chamber ot Commerce is to be held in Council Chambers this evening to discuss the question ol rating on unimproved values.

Several letters regarding various Government grants and ..subsidies have been received by the: County Council from the Public Works Department, and the Council has decided to reply that it is prepared to undertake the expenditure ot the money when the necessary authority to do so is received.

Messrs W. M. Cullen and Co., cash drapers and importers, of Paeroa, announce a great pre-Christmas sale, commencing to-morrow, Saturday, 3rd inst. In the advertisement elsewhere in' this issue are given a lew samples of the cheap prices ruling at the sale.

Something very nearly approaching a scene occurred at yesterday's meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council owing to a well-known contractor taking from the table a paper put there for the use of members only. One of the members remonstrated with him, but this had no effect, and the chairman had to leave his seat to see that the paper was returned. Even then the contractor was in no hurry to return the document, and adjusted his spectacles with the remark that he l< would return the paper presently." However, a second command from the chairman had the desired effect, and the paper was returned, and the business proceeded with as usual.

We are pleased to note that Mr G. Crosby has sufficiently recovered trom his recent illness to be able to be about again.

Mr A. Cassrels, who is laid up in the Thames Hospital, is, we are pleased to learn, progressing satisfactorily.

On our first page ro-day appears a new advertisement by Messrs J. Hague Smith and Co., to which we direct attention _ •\;, ;-.;' . . On Thursday next, at Hikutaia, an auction sale of stock is to be held by the Farmers' Co-operative Auctioneering Company. Good entries of about 300 head of well-bred cattle have been received, particulars of which are given in the advertisement in another part of this issue. Further entries are solicited.

The Ohinemuri Cdunty Council offices at'Paeroa have been in a pretty dilapidated condition for some time past, and naturally they have been getting worse and worse all the time, until just now the floor in places is hardly safe to walk on. The climax was reached yesterday morning, when one ot the members of the Council put his foot through ■ the floor on a particularly weak board. Tins brought matters to a head, for in the afternoon the question of repairs or a new office came along for discussion, and the engineer received instructions to prepare plans and specifications for a new structure.

The special services in connection with the anniversary of the Paeroa Methodist Sunday school will be continued on Sunday next in the Methodist Church. The preacher both morning and evening will be Mr Geo. B. Hinton, a student, who is taking charge of the local Methodist Church. A special feature ot the services is to be the singing, led by a choir ot 50 voices. On Tuesday evening the annual entertainment and distribution of prizes will be held in the Druids' Hall at half-past seven, the chair to be taken by the Rev. A. C. Randerson. A good programme has been arranged, and a charge of sixpence tor admission will be made so as to defray expenses. The scholars' tea will be held in the hall at six o'clock.

Members of the Ohinemuri County Council have been quite moderate of late m their requests for works in various parts of the County, with the result that the bank overdraft has been slowly reduced. At the meeting yesterday the report of the finance committee stated that the overdraft was £7476 Ss.ild, and this caused Mr Strange to remark that the Council was to be congratulated on the tact that the overdraft was lower than it had been for four years past, notwithstanding ihe extraordinary expenditure owing to the floods. Other members also expressed their approval of the financial position, but as the meeting had nearly concluded no fresh works were authorised so as to increase the overdraft again.

The question of the insurance of workmen was mentioned at the meeting ot the Ohinemun County Council yesterday in connection with a claim for compensation consequent on the death .of an employee of a sub-contractor. It was stated that the relatives would first of all look to the sub-contractor for the money; it he could not pay, then the contractor was liable ; and finally the employer (the County Council) would be held liable, for the money. Mr Corbett said that it seemed that these men were insured three times over, namely, by the Council, the contractor, and the sub-contractor, and they were thus paying a lot of money away needlessly. Other members suggested that it should be a condition of the contracts that the contractor should insure his employees, but it was pointed out that this was impracticable, perhaps illegal, and the only safe way tor the Council to do was to insure the whole lot. Discussion on the matter dropped without anything definite being done. BOWEL COMPLAINT IN CHILDREN. The most successful medicine in use for bowel complaints in children is Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy. It can always be depended upon to cure diarrhoea and dysentry. This preparation has been in constant use for nearly 40 yeais, and has met with uniform success everywhere. Sold by all chemists and storekeepers.
