A large consignment of bees, which had arrived by rail to the order of a Palmerston South apiarist, was responsible for the temporary disorganisation of the local railway staff. It appears (says the local Times) that quite a number of bees had escaped from the hives, and when the door of the truck was opened by two unsuspecting porters the bees set up a lively attack. The porters endeavoured to beat them oft, but when they found that the enemy was being continually reinforced it was suddenly borne in upon them that the discreet are brave, and they incontinently fled for goods office, each porter with a perfect halo of bees about his head. The goods clerks were quietly performing their routine in the office when the two porters and a swarm of bees made a hurried entrance. Chaos describes the condition of that office for the next half hour, and the state of the hands and faces of the men engaged in the struggle now bear witness to the fighting powers of the busy little bee.
