Accident at Kopu.
MAN NEARLY DROWNED.
An accident that might have had a fatal termination, had it not been for tho promptitude of two men named0. Smith and Harry Major, occurred on the Thames River, near ICopu. on Monday. An elderly man named David Adamsonwas in a dingey, and w.iß towing a raft which was loaded with chains and goar, when the raft sunk under the weight and pulling the dingey after it Adamson was precipitated into the water He managed to keep afloat by holding on to two. boards, but eventually lost his hold ■ and sunk. His cries, however, were heard by Smith and Major,, and they cut the line of a dingey ashore, and went to the rescue. Before they leached Adamson he had. sunk a' second time, and was about to sink a third time when they caught him and pulled him on board their dingey..^ He was carried in an exhausted state to the Kopu Hotel, and, therevW every attention was, paid him,' with . . result that he subsequently regained his • strength. He had a very narrow escape from drowning, • and ,had it not been for the promptitude of Smith and Major, he must have lost his life. Mr J. Willhms, 6t ]£opu, heard the man's cries for help, [and "sent nssistance,- but 1 by that time • Adamson had been rescued from his perilous position.
