THE COMMERCIAL HOTEL.

The Police reported that the stables in connection with Mr J. W. Shaw's Commercial Hotel, Paeroa, required pulling down. At the annual meeting this had been ordered'to be done, but had not yet been attended to. Mr Jackson, who appeared for the licensee, said that the owners had not yet been able to make the necessary arrangements. There was now a probability that the stables would be removed to the. opposite side of the road. The owners had been prepared to repair the stables, but Sergeant Brennan had said that the stables should be removed.

Sergeant Brerinan said that the stables were a menace to public health, and would be unbearable in the summer time. They should be reruovod altogether from alongside the hotel. ■ , , •.

The Chairman, remarked that if hotelkeepers who. make applications for renewals do not fulfil the conditions on which the licenses are granted, the committee would have to consider in future whether they would not adjourn applications to which there are objections until the matters complained of are attended to. Mr Jackson said that the present licensee had not attempted to get behind the committee's instructions; he Was simply unable to fulfil them in th« time. The stables were used by owners of coaches plying between Paoroa and Waihi, and they would find it difficult to get other stables. The Chairman asked what distance the stables were from the hotel.

Sergeant Brennan: About two yards. Er Cock said that if the stable was not a nuisance it ipas a convenience to the public. In olden times no license was granted without a stable. Mr Gavin said that he and two other commissioners had inspected the stables, and they thought it would be better to have, them shifted to another site, opposite the hotel. He thought the licensee should be given two months in which to make the removal.

The Chairman said the general feeling of the committee was that the stables should be removed, and this would have to be done within two months. ,
