FINNISH BARQUES

Sold For Breaking Up PAMIR AND PASSAT PA AUCKLAND, Dec. 13. The Finnish barques Pamir and Passat have been sold to a Belgian firm for breaking up. The two vessels, among the last surviving great windjammers, have both close associations with New Zealand. The Pamir was for seven years under the New Zealand flag as a prize of war, and the Passat was a visitor to the Dominion before the war. Their owner, M. Edgar Erickson, whose father once owned the famous Finnish fleet of 30 sailing ships, said last year that it was practically impossible to' run the vessels because of the costs of upkeep. The 45-year-old Pamir was handed back to the Erickson line at Wellington in November 1948. The Pamir and Passat were the only ships in the 1949 grain race from Australia to England. Manned by a New Zealand crew, the Pamir lost by only a, few hours. Until early this ■yeaf the two. ships were used by the British Food Ministry as grain warehouses. ••
