RONGOTAI AIRPORT
Government Considering
New Plan
PA WELLINGTON, Dec. 13. The Government is reported to have the latest scheme for the extension of Rongotai Aerodrome. Its acceptance and support for Moa Point, Rongotai terrace, Evan’s Bay as the site for the runway is expected to be announced soon.
After Government approval, the plan will be presented to the Wellington City Council and the Wellington Harbour Board for acceptance. City Council engineers will immediately begin the preparation of estimates of the cost of the subway, street and transport works necessitated by the plan. This should take about two weeks from the time the Ministry of Works plan is presented to the council. The cost of the new scheme is estimated to be only a little more than the £2.800,000 provided for the last plan. This plan, involving the construction of a runway across Rongotai College grounds, was abandoned after tests had disclosed unsatisfactory ground formations deep under the site.
